I have the premium license, but the 'Backup to single zip file' option on the backup tab is not enabled. Why?

Are there other constraints that I need to be aware of?

Which version of BestSync are you using?
Could you please try BestSync 2015 (beta) to see if the option is enabled?

I downloaded and installed 9.1.1.2. The backup to zip option was still disabled, but I checked the enable backup archiving check box and that enabled the zip option.

In the test I ran, it didn't create the zip file in the backup directory. It just wrote each file just like it did without the zip option checked.

What am I missing?

I'm expecting that the files in the source directory get zipped into a zip file in the target directory (file named from the source directory).

Perhaps I'm not understanding this correctly, since the documentation has not been updated to explain the zip option.

I have tested this issue, the result is OK.
If you want to backup the files to a ZIP archive, please set the backup setting like the following bitmap:
[attachment=0]zip_bak.png[/attachment]
And please note, to use this feature, you need the Premium License at least.

I didn't realize that I had to specify the name of the zip file, now it works.

A question: When I add a single file to the source of the backup zip file, does BestSync add that file to the zip file, or does it rewrite the entire zip file?

In my test, it seemed to take just as long to add the single file as it did the first time to write the entire zip file. And it seemed that the time stamps on the files already in the zip file had been updated.

When some files are backed up to the ZIP archive file, though the whole ZIP file need to be updated, but only the changed files are compressed to the ZIP file.
